NHRI input in the national disability strategy

The Equality and Human Rights Commission of Great Britain issued a briefing to the UK Government to inform the development of a national disability strategy. The briefing recommends guiding principles and priority areas for the government to focus its strategy on. The EHRC highlights the importance of grounding the strategy in the UK’s international human rights obligations, in particular its obligations under CRPD, will ensure that disabled people’s rights are at the centre of the strategy and its implementation.

The priority areas covered in the briefing are:

  • actively involving disabled people in policy and decision-making
  • improving the accessibility of the built environment
  • improving the accessibility of the transport system
  • embedding accessibility across all services
  • reducing detention
  • ensuring a fully inclusive education system
  • equal access to employment
  • ensuring an inclusive justice system
  • reforming the social care system to promote independence and wellbeing
  • ensuring an adequate standard of living and social security;
  • strengthening the status of the CRPD and international human rights standards in domestic law
  • strengthening the public sector equality duty, and
  • increasing representation in political and public life.
